Our curriculum is designed to be inclusive, recognising and celebrating the diverse abilities, interests and backgrounds of our learners. It is also driven by the need to prepare our children for lifelong learning and the skills we believe that children need to support them in being successful, thriving young people and future adults. 

At Old Leake, we offer a rich and vibrant curriculum which is ambitious for all learners.  We develop the essential knowledge, skills and understanding which are the building blocks for later life.  Our curriculum encompasses not only the formal requirements of the National Curriculum but goes beyond the experiences of the classroom to ensure that our children are exposed to the richest and most varied opportunities that we can provide; ones which promote confident, self-motivated pupils who are eager for lifelong learning.  Our aim is to enrich every child's school experience by creating an environment and contexts where they are encouraged to succeed and be the best they can be. The exploration of new skills and experiences help to nurture resilience, curiosity and creativity.

English - Reading

A child's reading skills are important to their success in school as they will allow them to access the breadth of the curriculum and improve their communication and language skills. Additionally, reading can be an enjoyable and imaginative time for pupils, which can open doors to all kinds of new worlds for them. Through reading, pupils have the opportunity to develop culturally, socially and emotionally as well as reaping the benefits academically. At Old Leake Primary Academy a ‘Love of Language’ is developed and fostered for the enjoyment, challenge and understanding of text. This love of language is developed through poetry, a variety of fictional genres, non-fiction, test questions and even through research.

Reading is at the very core of our ‘Vibrant and Enriched’ curriculum at OLPA and each year group’s topics are (whenever possible) related to termly (half-termly in KS1 and Foundation Stage) class novels. Not only does this way of learning help to make links to other areas of the curriculum but it also provides context for the children and highlights the importance of reading whilst also encouraging an enjoyment for it too.

Our wonderful new school library is the heart of reading within our school. Our goal is to provide children with access to a wide range of books to cater to all interests. We aim to develop a genuine love of reading throughout a child’s educational journey, and having a library filled with wonderful books is a key part of this mission!

English - Writing

We want to become a school of extraordinary writers; therefore, writing is central to everything we do. Firstly, it involves children and teachers writing together every single day. They write for many different purposes, and for a variety of audiences. They are moved to write about what they are most knowledgeable and passionate about. They also write to deepen their responses and understandings of what they read. They write to transform their own (and others) thinking about what they learn in the wider curriculum subjects. They write to entertain, to paint with words, to persuade and share their opinions, to teach others, to make a record of things they don’t want to forget, and to reflect on their own thoughts and personal experiences. They write about themselves and their cultures. They also write to reflect and sustain the cultures of people they might not have met. They share their writing and discuss their development with their peers, teachers and caregivers.

We create genuine writing communities in our classrooms. Pupils write in positive and enthusiastic writing environments which are headed up by passionate writer-teachers. Our classrooms are a mixture of creative writing workshops and professional publishing houses. They are rigorous, highly organised and reassuringly consistent. Pupils are encouraged to take risks and to be innovative, but also to write with focus and serious intent. We adapt our teaching depending on what individual pupils need instruction in most. Whether they are in Nursery or Year Six and regardless of where they are in their development or experience, all pupils are treated as writers and are helped not only to write pieces which are successful in terms of the objectives of the curriculum but also meaningful to them as young authors.
